Chickasaw was originally located near the upper Alabama-Mississippi and lower Tennessee region before they were relocated to Oklahoma.  The pottery is characterized by its dark clay and Mississippian tradition.

When it comes to Chickasaw traditional pottery, Joanna Underwood stands alone.  She builds accurate pieces from the early traditions of the Chickasaw Nation - the Mississippian period.  The above pieces could have come from right out of the ground.  Joanna's work is described on her Chickasaw.Net web page.  She also works at the Chickasaw Times doing graphics arts.  She had created some excellent traditional pottery!
