It was a surprise on the trip to see
Glenn Bartley when we arrived at the
restaurant in Porto Jofre. He was leading a group on one of his
photo workshops.
Glenn provides valuable photo tips in both eBooks found on his website
http://www.glennbartley.com/
and on
YouTube.
After watching his YouTube trip to Brazil, we got a good intro into Brazilian culture.
We were happy to meet him - very nice gentleman.

At the time of this photo, we were roaming around and
looking for birds...

-
and the power boat takes off... |

As an add-on to the birding trip, we went into San Francisco after the
very rare Parakeet Auklet, that showed up Land's End. Found it.
So we proceeded to Lafayette Park to see if we could find some of the
population of Red-masked Parakeets residing in the City. Found
them!

Parakeet Auklet # 1,400 |
Bird has been chased by 100's of birders (literally) |
A rare find at Land's End in San Francisco had birders swarming. Monique and I headed down there July 29 to see if we can catch a look. The bird has been unpredictable, but for those who do see it, this is a biggie. The species is usually way out to sea or in remote places. For several weeks, it was eating, resting and hanging around the rocks at Land's End (up at the north west end of SF).
We arrived early (6:30AM) and got a quick lo...ok before it flew around Hermit rock and landed on the far side out of sight. Stayed about an hour longer but had to go look for the Red-masked Parakeets before heading home.
So we went back the next day for a better look - after all, it was our 1400th bird. Saw it immediately in the water at 6:40AM, but it flew off. So we stayed with a gathering crowd (12-15 birders) to wait it's reappearance. At about 7:50, someone's phone went off - the bird was on the back of the rock and can be seen about .3 miles down the trail. Like a green flag, the crowd headed down at different speeds until we all bunched up at the viewing spot. Scopes all pointed and sharing openly. Very good views and lousy pictures. Such is life in the birding world. Wouldn't change a thing.

And then we heard about a few
Egyptian Geese near Sacramento about a week later... |

The geese occur in 3 or 4 different small pockets in
California - a scattered group up north and more down south. Probably
escaped captives at some point in the distant past.
They also occur like this in Florida. |
While looking
at the geese, Monique spotted a Least Bittern picking its way through
the reeds (bonus sighting)... |

And then... for those who were on the trip to Brazil, we
discovered that the IOC recognizes the White-backed Stilt that we saw in
the Pantanal (split from the Black-necked Stilt). By our rules
(Monique and I), if any of the organizations (IOC, AOU w/ SACC), splits
a species and we see it, we'll count these. We're also counting
the Amazonian Royal-Flycatcher we saw in Brazil as separate from the
Northern Royal-Flycatcher we saw in Costa Rica. In order for us to
take away a sighting due to species groupings, all organizations must do
the grouping. And, as always, we both must see the bird in order
to count it. Our game, our rules... |
